What’s the hidden cost of Annual CCTV Maintenance to end-users?

Annual CCTV maintenance usually comprises of one engineer visit a year, followed by the end-user checking and reporting issues.

The assumption was that this cost was pretty insignificant in the scheme of things, but is it? Let’s work it out.

Here’s the typical example we’re going to use:

A retail chain of 50 shops, the CCTV is checked every day by a staff member, and each check takes ~10 minutes to complete. To keep things simple, we’ll assume minimum wage at £8.72/hour but ignore other staff costs:

The cost of each 10 minute check is £8.72/6 = £1.45

The cost per year to check each store is £1.45 x 364 = £527.80

So, the cost per year to check every store is £527.80 x 50 = £26,390

Wow! So it’s costing the retailer over £26,000 ever year to check their CCTV systems across 50 stores, on top of the cost of the CCTV maintenance contract!

Obviously, these are fairly simplistic calculations, but certainly not the ‘insignificant amount’ that was expected.

So the next question is; how can you help reduce this cost?

The answer is pretty simple – do their CCTV checks for them. But that doesn’t mean replicating what they are doing and absorbing the cost. Check their CCTV remotely and automatically as part of your value-added service.

Here’s a few typical reasons why end-users shouldn’t be relied upon to check and report CCTV problems:

  1. They are not trained to find faults.
  2. They’re most likely too busy doing their job.
  3. The systems may not be accessible or remotely installed.
  4. Not all CCTV faults and issues are obvious.
  5. The employee checking may benefit from it not working!

Fortunately, CCTV maintenance is changing, and the onus to check CCTV systems is now moving away from the end-user, driven in part by necessity.

During lock-down, it was impossible for end-users to check their CCTV systems, leaving them at risk. Systems had to be remotely checked to ensure they are working (if they were checked at all).

However, these manual checks can take up a large amount of time and resource when you have 10, 100, or 1000’s of systems that need to be checked on a daily basis, which is where our award-winning CheckMyCCTV™ checking solution can help.

CheckMyCCTV™ automatically checks your customers’ remote CCTV systems 24/7 for faults, operation, and compliancy issues as part of your service.

You can see the status of all your customers CCTV systems at any point in time and detect issues as they happen, allowing you to target service visits when they are needed.

By automating your remote CCTV maintenance checks, you will ensure your customers’ CCTV is working, compliant, and fit for purpose without them needing to do anything, and you’ll also benefit by:

  • Generating additional recurring revenue streams,
  • Using your resources more effectively, and
  • Reducing your costs and manpower requirement.

More than 25,000 CCTV systems are remotely maintenance checked 24/7 using CheckMyCCTV™, are yours?

Are end-users at fault if their CCTV isn’t working?

We conducted a poll on LinkedIn posing a hypothetical question:

“Your customer had a break-in and the CCTV wasn’t working. Whose fault is it?”

Without any other information, an overwhelming number of respondents (over half of 171 votes) indicated that it was the user at fault for not reporting the issue prior to the break-in.

The result of the poll raised a few eyebrows – the customer has already had a break-in and now it’s their fault for not finding the issue first!

To some extent it should come as no surprise, CCTV maintenance contracts have traditionally required the end-user to check their systems regularly.

This has been a legacy of the industry for the last 30 years since recording to video tape, but it begs the question, why?

Here’s a few typical reasons why end-users shouldn’t be relied upon to check and report CCTV problems:

  1. They are not trained to find faults.
  2. They’re most likely too busy doing their job.
  3. The systems may not be accessible or remotely installed.

Mobotix camera support added into CheckMyCCTV™

We are delighted to announce that Mobotix cameras are now compatible with our award-wining CheckMyCCTV™ maintenance monitoring solution.

CheckMyCCTV™ has traditionally been used to monitor multi-site CCTV systems such as retailers, hotel chains, car dealerships, and banks etc.

We’re now seeing an increase in demand to many other types of systems including rapid deployed CCTV towers, and systems in harsh environments; with recording directly to SD Cards on the camera or to NAS devices.

In these high-risk environments, it’s more important than ever to ensure that the CCTV systems are operational and fit for purpose 24/7.

CheckMyCCTV™ automatically checks and reports issues with the cameras, recordings, or image quality, so engineering resource can be targeted proactively.

Darren Rewston, Managing Director of CheckMySystems Ltd. comments “We have seen growing demand for Mobotix camera support from our existing customer base, the flexibility of Mobotix cameras means they are a great fit for our customers installing cameras in any environment.”

Adding “We’ve optimised our Mobotix camera integration to check all the installed camera modules, whether colour, b&w, or thermal, to ensure they are working and fit or purpose.”

CheckMyCCTV™ Monitoring Partner scheme launched

Given the unprecedented lock down in many countries following the corona virus outbreak, many CCTV Installers have found themselves unable to attend sites to perform their planned CCTV maintenance visits.

This is leaving end-users at risk of faulty CCTV systems leaving their sites at risk, at a time where crime rates are increasing and properties are being left unoccupied. To counter this, we are launching the CheckMyCCTV™ Monitoring Partner scheme.

As many CCTV monitoring stations already have connectivity into their customers’ sites, they are able to perform automated remote maintenance checks 24/7 using our award-winning CheckMyCCTV™, with no setup on site required.

The checks include:

Connection Issues
Reports when the connection to the CCTV system fails or the system goes offline.
Camera Failures
Detects if a camera has developed a fault or is tampered with.
Image Integrity
Detects if the camera images are too bright or dark, out of focus, or out of alignment.
Hard Disk Failures
Detects hard disks failures or if it stops recording.
Recording Issues
Reports if the system is recording for less than the expected duration.
Time & Date Inaccuracy
Reports when the time is incorrect or tampered with.

Customers receive a scheduled daily status report email from our monitoring partners, and a live web status link showing sites will issues, so they can target only sites with issues.

Monitoring partners get these benefits:

  • FREE CheckMyCCTV™ Software with your branding
  • FREE configuration and remote training.
  • Extended Trial period.
  • Cost effective Pay-as-you-go monthly pricing.

Support for Axis cameras added to CheckMyCCTV™

Were delighted to announce that Axis cameras are now compatible with our award-wining CheckMyCCTV™ maintenance monitoring solution.

CheckMyCCTV™ has traditionally been used to monitor multi-site static CCTV systems, such as retailers, hotel chains, car dealerships, and bookmakers etc.

We’re now seeing an increase in demand to support rapid deployment and CCTV towers with recording directly to SD Cards on the camera, and connected via mobile networks.

In these high-risk environments, it’s more important than ever to ensure that the CCTV systems are operational and fit for purpose 24/7.

One constraint when monitoring the status of mobile connected systems is the the amount of data passing to and from the device.

By signing up to the Axis Application Development Partner programme, we have been able to optimise the data requirement for mobile connectivity. The checks are quick and require very little bandwidth, and no CheckMyCCTV™ functionality is lost.

Darren Rewston, Managing Director of CheckMySystems Ltd. comments “The Axis cameras is a great fit for our customers utilising mobile connectivity and rapid deployment of cameras. Integration of Axis cameras into CheckMyCCTV™ has been optimised for that environment.

Adding “The built-in SD Card makes it an economical and efficient way to record locally at the camera without requiring additional equipment. Our CheckMyCCTV™ solution integrates seamlessly, seeing it as a single channel NVR”.

CheckMyCCTV™ is compatible with Axis Cameras and Encoders using API version 2.0 and above. For more information about Axis products, visit www.axis.com
