Annual CCTV maintenance usually comprises of one engineer visit a year, followed by the end-user checking and reporting issues.
The assumption was that this cost was pretty insignificant in the scheme of things, but is it? Let’s work it out.
Here’s the typical example we’re going to use:
A retail chain of 50 shops, the CCTV is checked every day by a staff member, and each check takes ~10 minutes to complete. To keep things simple, we’ll assume minimum wage at £8.72/hour but ignore other staff costs:
The cost of each 10 minute check is £8.72/6 = £1.45
The cost per year to check each store is £1.45 x 364 = £527.80
So, the cost per year to check every store is £527.80 x 50 = £26,390
Wow! So it’s costing the retailer over £26,000 ever year to check their CCTV systems across 50 stores, on top of the cost of the CCTV maintenance contract!
Obviously, these are fairly simplistic calculations, but certainly not the ‘insignificant amount’ that was expected.
So the next question is; how can you help reduce this cost?
The answer is pretty simple – do their CCTV checks for them. But that doesn’t mean replicating what they are doing and absorbing the cost. Check their CCTV remotely and automatically as part of your value-added service.
Here’s a few typical reasons why end-users shouldn’t be relied upon to check and report CCTV problems:
- They are not trained to find faults.
- They’re most likely too busy doing their job.
- The systems may not be accessible or remotely installed.
- Not all CCTV faults and issues are obvious.
- The employee checking may benefit from it not working!
Fortunately, CCTV maintenance is changing, and the onus to check CCTV systems is now moving away from the end-user, driven in part by necessity.
During lock-down, it was impossible for end-users to check their CCTV systems, leaving them at risk. Systems had to be remotely checked to ensure they are working (if they were checked at all).
However, these manual checks can take up a large amount of time and resource when you have 10, 100, or 1000’s of systems that need to be checked on a daily basis, which is where our award-winning CheckMyCCTV™ checking solution can help.
CheckMyCCTV™ automatically checks your customers’ remote CCTV systems 24/7 for faults, operation, and compliancy issues as part of your service.
